Giro d’Italia Stage 16 Recap: Sabbio Chiese – Monte Bondone, A Day of High Climbs and Shifting Power

Stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia, from Sabbio Chiese to Monte Bondone, proved to be a day of high climbs and shifting power. It was a grueling 203 km mountain stage, characterized by difficult climbs and thrilling performances from the world’s elite cyclists.

The peloton started the day with an impressive show of power, reaching an average speed of 52.6 km/h in the first hour before the mountains loomed. This remarkable speed set the tone for the day, highlighting the urgency and intensity of the competition that lay ahead.

The first major climb was the Santa Barbara Pass, where the King of the Mountain competition was fierce. Ben Healy from EF Education-EasyPost took the first position, followed by Davide Gabburo and Martin Marcellusi from Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè, showing their climbing prowess and adding some valuable points to their tally.

The second significant ascent, the Marassone, was dominated by Astana Qazaqstan riders. Vadim Pronskiy took the first place, while his teammate Christian Scaroni came in second. However, Davide Gabburo managed to secure the third place again, maintaining a strong presence for his team in the mountains.

The climax of the day was the stage win by João Almeida from UAE, who showcased an outstanding final attack. Displaying exceptional strength and determination, Almeida powered past his competitors and crossed the line in triumph. It was a display of brilliant tactical riding and raw power, proving his worth in this year’s Giro.

However, the day was not so favourable for Primoz Roglic of Jumbo Visma. Unable to match Almeida’s pace in the final stretch, he finished the stage in a less than ideal position. This setback resulted in Roglic losing precious time, affecting his standing in the General Classification.

The conclusion of the stage marked a significant shift in the GC. Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers emerged as the new leader, reaffirming his team’s dominance in this year’s Giro. Following Thomas was stage winner João Almeida, now second in the GC, just 18 seconds behind Thomas. Despite his difficult day, Roglic remained in contention, albeit at a larger deficit of 29 seconds.

The stage demonstrated once again the harsh yet beautiful realities of cycling. It was a day of relentless climbs, high speeds, and intense competition. The riders showcased their strength and endurance as they navigated the challenging course, providing the spectators with a thrilling display of elite cycling.

As we move into the final week of the Giro, the stakes are higher than ever. With the General Classification still closely contested, the riders will need to dig deep and give everything they have in the remaining stages.

In conclusion, Stage 16 was a remarkable day of racing. It showcased the best of what the Giro d’Italia has to offer – high drama, intense competition, and the awe-inspiring spectacle of world-class cyclists pushing themselves to the limit. As we look forward to the stages to come, one thing is certain – the Giro d’Italia continues to captivate and thrill fans around the world.
